Jason Ravitz (PI) provided a summary of findings from two studies -- one of leading-edge schools conducted with Hank Becker at University of California, Irvine (UCI) for the National School Network (NSN) project in 1997. The other from the national Teacher, Learning & Computing 1998 (TLC) study (also with Becker) based on a representative sample of teachers (grades 4-12) in US schools and surveys of high-tech and reforming schools.
Daniel Light from the Center for Children and Technology (CCT)
in New York helped to analyze and discuss a revision of the NSN instrument
that was employed in a study of district-wide systemic reform in Union
City, NJ.
Ed Coughlin and Kirk Vandersall from the Milken Foundation discussed field testing of their Professional Development Continuum, and their "7 Dimensions" of technology integration that has now led to their work on EnGauge framework for educational reform hosted at NCREL.
Beverly Hunter from the Learning Communities Research Group at Boston College shared lessons learned from the Vanguard for Learning project over the past three years, including her paper "Against the Odds: Teacher development and invention with technology under less-than-ideal conditions".
Margaret Riel from the UCI's Center for Collaborative Research in Education (CCRE) provided her insights including findings from a project with novice-technology using teachers and schools in Anaheim, CA.
Michelle Riconscente (CCT) discussed lessons learned from the Rhode Island Teachers & Technology Initiative (download.pdf).
Margaret Honey shared key features that CCT researchers have found are necessary for districts to make successful and sustainable investments in technology. This included a synthesis of findings from years of studies including the National Study Tour (summary chart, download report.pdf), and her co-authored White Paper entitled "Perspectives on Technology and Education Research: Lessons from the Past and Present". Robert Spielvogel also from EDC and co-author of the National Study Tour was also online to discuss this work. Please note the recent report from this group: a 20 year policy study.
Bruce Goldberg from CO-NECT schools will shared lessons learned from the award-winning Co-NECT Schools and the development of their school-wide Benchmarks.
