John began his career in education as a high school social science and English teacher. He was a school coach for the Bay Area Coalition of Essential Schools, and was a member of the National School Reform Faculty. On the staff of the Western Assessment Collaborative at WestEd he coached schools in the use of standards and assessments to improve instruction. John also developed and presented workshops for teachers on standards-based practice in preparation for the CA High School Exit Exam and contributed to the writing of Aiming High: High Schools for the 21st Century, the CA State Department of Education's blueprint for high school reform.
John received his B.A. in Political Science from Stanford University, his M.A. in Educational Technology and Educational Administration from San Francisco State University. He also holds a secondary teaching credential in social science and English.
