What is it? In this video, made by Waverly-Shell Rock Middle School in Iowa, a team of 8th grade teachers - math, SPED, tech, art, consumer sciences - explain how students used design software and learned CCSS math and more by designing public art sculptures. Community experts consulted on the designs and judged the students' work, and the top proposal for a sculpture was actually built by high school students and installed at the middle school.
Why do we like it? This is a good example of a rigorous project with creativity and critical thinking, plus strong math content and community connections.
How can you use it? You and your colleagues can use this video to generate your own ideas for similar projects, and to raise issues for discussion about how PBL can address CCSS.
