Erin Starkey National Faculty
Erin spent seven years teaching 3rd and 5th grades, emphasizing science, math and technology through PBL in both Austin and North Texas districts. Currently, she is embarking on a new adventure as the K-12 Instructional Coach for City View ISD, emphasizing technology integration as the district has gone 1-to-1 with Chromebooks in grades 5-12 and placed computer carts in grades K-4. Erin was able to initiate an iPad pilot in Austin which has since turned into a district-wide technology initiative. She enjoys presenting PBL/technology integration at various conferences throughout Texas.
Erin’s alma mater, Abilene Christian University, introduced her to Project Based Learning via BIE at a new-to-profession conference the summer after her first year of teaching. She discussed with professors how daunting the current situation in education seemed -- too many standards, too little time, too many different types of learners -- but Project Based Learning has proved to be a rigorous pedagogy that is authentic, engaging and meaningful for her and ALL her learners. Erin has seen firsthand how powerful Gold Standard PBL is for ELL, SpEd, G/T and average students. She has witnessed how incredible the transformation of learning is for students in both affluent and low income areas. PBL is not one more thing; it is the thing that allows other educational initiatives to work together. Erin is honored to be a part of the BIE team getting to share this pedagogy with teachers and students around the world!
