Mike has fifteen years experience teaching social studies, math, technology, and English as a second language in China. He has taught social studies in an alternative high school, and math and technology at the middle school level. He discovered PBL from his STEM based technology class and connections to other educators through social media.
Mike currently teaches social studies and math at Kent Innovation High, a Project Based Learning lab school in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His American Studies class is a team-taught class, integrated with ELA. Mike leads PBL, standards based learning, and technology workshops for educators across the country. He is committed to student-centered learning by giving them authentic opportunities to do real work with local community partners.
Mike founded NovaNow, a conversational conference at his school focused on PBL, inquiry, and student-centered pedagogy. He also collaborated to create a Maker Space at MACUL, the state ISTE affiliated conference. Mike has created a national PBL election project, #MyParty, that runs in presidential election years. His passion is helping others create PBL curriculum at all age levels and for all content areas.
