Teresa Dempsey National Faculty
Teresa serves as the Director of Professional Development with the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio. Although she coordinates numerous professional learning options, PBL is her true passion. Teresa and her team has worked with BIE since 2010 in providing PBL capacity building support to numerous districts and schools in central Ohio. Since that time, she has witnessed an awakening in teacher efficacy to design authentic learning and believes that PBL has made a transformational impact on classroom practice and student learning.
Her educational background includes serving as an Elementary Science Supervisor in a large urban district where she developed performance based curriculum and teamed with a NASA astronomer to create a unique portable planetarium program for elementary students to help alleviate common astronomy misconceptions. Prior to that, Teresa’s elementary teaching experience included creating the district’s first K-2 inquiry-based science lab that integrated her love for children’s literature.
Teresa earned her Ph.D. via a full-time graduate assistantship in which she worked closely with Project Discovery and the Department of Educational Leadership at Miami University (Ohio) to research and study inquiry-based learning in the field. This work influenced her desire to author a PBL-based dissertation, ”Leadership for the Constructivist Classroom” that resulted in designing a PBL graduate course for future school leaders to facilitate their understanding of the support and culture needed to nurture teachers engaged in inquiry-based learning.
