Students created a textual and visual representation of a hero in their life.  Students utilized literary devices, sensory details, and the narrative form to create a written character sketch of their hero in a heroic moment and then represented that moment through photography.

Students studied the Aboriginal Art form, including non-naturalistic abstract designs and naturalistic paintings of human, plant and animal figures. They then selected a wild animal they felt represented their personality, wrote an artist statement about the qualities they shared with their animal, and created an animal self-portrait using the traditional dotting technique and abstract design elements used by aborigines.

Students will create an interactive, museum-quality exhibit that fit in a window frame and illustrated a principle of math or physics. Analog: most of the projects were mechanical.  The products were made not for PCs, but for the actual 24” x 24” x 5” interior windows of the school.

Students select an object, take pictures of it in different environments, and then create paintings based on those photographs. Students tend to care more about the opinions of their peers than their teachers. 6th graders are paired with 8th graders. The 8th graders take the photographs and the 6th graders make watercolor paintings based on those photos.

After studying various civil rights issues in class, the students were assigned a culminating project to showcase one specific movement in our Civil Rights Museum for Exhibition Night.  Products included biographies, art pieces, modern world connections, informational pamphlets, timelines, and an interactive component.

Students explored dimensions of their identity and created a double-sided canvas that visually expressed two sides of their selves. On the front of the canvas, they painted an acrylic self-portrait that represented their outer self—how they present themselves to others. On the back side of the canvas, students produced a collage that represented their personal vision and the things that make them unique.
