Meta-Synthesis of Learning Outcomes
This graphic represents a synthesis of findings from studies of problem based learning. The meta-synthesis results summarized below are based on eight meta-analysis of ten or more individual PBL studies. After dozens of studies and eight meta-analyses it appears that PBL is more effective than traditional instruction for most outcomes. A few short-term knowledge assessments show a negative impact for PBL, while all of the other outcomes show a benefit for PBL use.
